David Maillu’s Tribute to USA President Barack Hussein Obama
Obama, Asante, Afendi! By David G Maillu (Maillu@davidgmaillu.com)
Obama, Oh Obama, u’Mama and u’Baba, Gosh, salamaliko!
This is only a congratulatory word from Kenya to America
Across the Atlantic Ocean route of slaves who died for the world
That the seed of human sense must be planted in the human soil
Evermore, watered with the human blood of continental perception
Obama, Oh Obama, u’Mwana, u’Mtu, welcome because
Once upon a time, Africa/America were one land mass
Before fate split America(from)Africa once upon a time, then
Followed the fatal big bang that gave birth to the slave trade route
Sending sparks of human life Across the Atlantic Ocean
America, please and please, come closer to Africa; please do
Because, once upon a time too, we were one in body & spirit.
Then, welcome to an ecstasy celebrated in the jungle of politics
You(we) knew one day it’ll come because you(we) had a dream
Of a festival adorned with human flowers of all colours, one day
Hodi hodi taking place off-shores of America and Africa, away
From hungry predatory political sharks on hunting spree.
Obama, Oh Obama, it’s so beautiful because it is you(us)!
We’ll dance and gyrate socio-politically; it’s a celebration
Sung over the beat of African drums beaten by black hands
Added to squeals of ululations echoing from African, hodi hodi
Across the Atlantic ocean, the slave trade route of the dead
Who took the cross, then drank the cup of poison given to them
So that one day, you(we’ll) celebrate and set a permanent date
For historical anniversaries because, after all, though they died
They did not die in vain; the mother-banana stem is cut down
In order to harvest the bananas; what a giant banana in Obama!
The angels are rejoicing became you(we) have made it
But the devils are crying foul because you(we) have made it
Please, step by step, with ease but firmness, all eyes alert, just go
In the company of those unto whom hope is born in a new dawn
Of cause, there’re those praying that you may fail, unto whom
We’ll spent sleepless nights praying to hurl them into oblivion
Always, God goes with the majority; that is why He/She’s with you.
He/She has been with you that you may reach the peak for Him/Her(us).
If only those ancestors were alive you(we’d) ask them the secrets
Of the healing mystic Number-Seven that should always be sounded
In all the anniversaries of why it had all to happen at this time.
Dear Obama, tell us where we should go from here
As its seems our dead-living spirits whispered to your ears.
Something extraordinarily great about everlasting hope…
Obama, Oh Obama, mwana’abantu, Gosh! And pole!
It happened because friction creates fire; you did it, and
Pole for the intense friction you had to go through; yet bravo!
Fire becomes divine when employed within divine intentions
But fire becomes hell-on-earth when employed for profanity
Dear Obama, you can only choose divinity in place of profanity
Because you bear us & the baggage of our dead-livings spirits
That will turn deserts into oasis; and turn garbage into jewels
Because you(we) said you(we) can, for you(we) had a dream
At the end of the tunnel of Twenty-one Century there’d be light
Oh dear Obama, we’ve seen it; it’s so good for you(us)
We human beings of many colours, creeds and human stations.
Obama, Afendi Obama, eat well as we eat so well, Afendi!
You’ve served us so well; we’ve eaten our fill, God bless you
Tomorrow is the D-day, carry all your(our) American arsenals
That you may enter this political jungle with ultimate force
Don’t look back because we’re behind you in one solid voice.
And that which is after you, we’ll kill it before it kills you
Because you are on a mission to kill miseries before they kill us.
God bless you Obama; God bless your family; God bless America!
PAINTING & DRAWING
Images and summaries, which I cannot express in black and white, I try to express it through Painting and Drawing. Most of my works are expressed through drawing, published as illustration in Broken Drum, KA, Holy Book of Neter, and other forthcoming publications:
| (The skin of African continent)
This expresses the socio-politico-cultural dimension of the move to destroy African values. The heart of African aesthetics is killed by European colonials, skinned and the hide is being dried for industrial process in making leather goods for sale on the international market.
The spider web symbolizes the dimensions of British Colonial Empire spread over the globe in which Britain colonized one-quarter of the world. The map of Britain at the centre of the spider web symbolizes the egocentric colonial spirit of Britain.
Expressing the universal desire to love and be loved and the empirical union of body and spirit
Passionate explosives, dynamites and imprisoning bodily desires responsible for triggers the genetic gun in creation of life/
Desire to use hands and material things to practically illustrate imaginary creations that give the human body shelter and home. Love of making use of natural forms for building and planting. My countryside self-constructed and botanical home.
The feelings that I cannot express in words, in painting and drawing, or in building, I try to express in music through music, in which I compose tunes, play the guitar and sing. Piracy has discouraged me from publishing my music. The words of my music express my poetic sense of life.
